Member question: Why am I so anxious around food?

One of the worst effects of weight cycling (dieting to lose, living to gain) is that it creates deep anxiety around the essential functions of living: being hungry, selecting food, and enjoying mealtime.
You know, life.
Member Kathleen wrote beautifully about the effects of a lifetime of turning to restrictive practices.

To me, having a healthy weight means taking the time to dismantle your inner diet voice–which is just self-talk generated by dieting.
Diets create suspicion and mistrust of food and, by extension, your body. Failure is the cherry on the sundae. These experiences alter your operating system, and anxiety is a warning of that disconnect.
I like to bring this up early in my weight loss program because it's essential to quit thinking that anxiety around food is about who you are and more as a result of the societal delusion of equating dieting with health.
Your brain could be spitting out the inputs of decades of programming. Garbage in, garbage out.
How to work with me:
- Learn to make real food–without recipes, gadgets, or hours of prep.
- Take my sugar course 🍭
- Individual coaching sessions (one or three).
- Hit reply and ask me a question!
This week, I'd like to hear from you.
- How did Kathleen's query make you feel?
- Have you experienced anxiety around your eating patterns?
- Do you think of food as calories or points long after the diet has been set aside?
- Does it feel difficult to understand your body's cues anymore?
