My favorite reads of the week 🍎
Things that might surprise people: I love Thanksgiving. I get to see my family and eat yummy things. Win-win.
That doesn't mean I put moderation or healthy eating on a shelf; I build it right in. Not out of some sense of virtue, but because I hate the hangover of feeling unwell or gaining a few pounds. And yes, I eat dessert, but there are some things I do differently, as I outline in the link below.
The piece that really moved me is the Times profile of Joan Didion's Thanksgiving preparations. She describes her kitchen as "a room of one's own," which is how I feel about my beloved kitchen.
I consider cooking a moving meditation.
I can actually feel my buzzing brain calm down as I reach for ingredients and warm up my pans. By the time it's ready to eat, I've reset from the day's difficulties.
Long live ritual.
Life is incredibly stressful right now. May your kitchen welcome and envelop you. May you embrace loved ones and delight in a good meal.
The Pieces 🍎
1. Between now and January 1st accounts for most of the weight a person gains over a lifetime. I've managed fifteen holiday seasons without gaining a pound. Here are my strategies ⤵️
Love the Holidays but dread gaining weight? Let's end that.
“Just back from 11 days of travel with work meetings, work meals, restaurants, and Thanksgiving.
Wow–didn't gain an ounce.
I'm so excited about the sustainability of these practices.
Looking forward to slaying the Holiday season for the first time ever!"
